2014 Play for Jay Event Recap

WELL ABOVE PAR!

On a beautiful September 8, 2014, the fourth annual Play for Jay Golf Classic was held at Mirimichi golf course. More than $38,000 was raised to benefit the Jay Uiberall Legacy Fund (JULF). Friends and family formed JULF in 2011 to honor Jay’s memory following his unexpected death in 2010. The Play for Jay Golf Classic is the main fundraiser for JULF, and all monies raised are used to support causes that Jay loved: anything with kids and to help those in the food service industry.

An exciting new partnership was announced at the tournament. JULF is pleased to partner with Reach Memphis to fund the Jay Uiberall Scholars program. Reach Memphis, formerly known as Memphis PREP, is a nonprofit organization that prepares students for college by providing opportunities for them to attend summer educational programs at colleges and preparatory schools around the country. The Jay Uiberall Scholars program is a follow-up program for any students who have already participated in a summer study travel program through Reach Memphis. Beginning in January 2015, 15 scholars selected by Reach Memphis will work with mentors, participate in mock interviews, learn how to prepare their resumes and college essays, learn proper etiquette, and much more over the course of 10 Saturdays at Rhodes College.

“We want to further these kids’ educational opportunities by providing them real life skills that will be applicable and invaluable,” said Andie. “It’s something that Jay would have loved.”

In addition to its support of the Jay Uiberall Culinary Academy located in south Memphis on the Knowledge Quest campus, JULF provides an annual scholarship to a student at the Kemmons Wilson School of Hospitality and Resort Management at the University of Memphis. At the Play for Jay Golf Classic, Bennekia Dessirrae Richard was awarded the Jay Uiberall scholarship for the 2014-2015 academic year.

JULF also has made a multi-year commitment to fund Serving Memphis, a nonprofit that JULF and others formed, which helps food service employees obtain free flu shots at Walgreen’s, obtain financial literacy education and much more.

We’d like to thank our generous sponsors for making this event a success.
